Invisible Woman aka Sue Storm
Hey, who do you think is Marvel's marquee female character? I mean, DC has Wonder Woman, (though Catwoman may be up there) but what would be the most recognisable gal in Marvel's stable? Would it be Sue? Or X-men's Storm? Rogue? Electra? Mary Jane? hmmm...
I can only hope you finish the Four and do The Thing next. These are great. Verrry entertaining!
ReplyDeleteAs far as names go, I'd say it would have to be Marvel Girl, although three separate women were known as "Marvel Girl."
ReplyDeleteHm. That's a great question. And to be honest, I don't think there's really a definitive answer to it. The main reason Wonder Woman (as with Superman and Batman) has the stature she does at DC is because she was one of the first female superheroes.
ReplyDeleteBut Marvel didn't really join the game until the 60s, and for better or worse, the only women in their comics early on were part of teams -- Invisible Girl, Wasp, Jean Grey, etc. There were no solo female Marvel titles until Ms. Marvel #1 in 1977. Then Spider-Woman in 1978, She-Hulk in 1980, and Dazzler in 1981. Ironically, none of these would be considered the most recognizable these days.
Younger people would probably say Storm or Rogue, older folks would probably say Invisible Girl, and those in the middle might say Electra. But I doubt you'd ever get much consensus, the way you can with Wonder Woman.
These are all great. Can't wait for the Thing.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work!
geekboy, you are a wealth of comic knowledge!

Aaaawwww... you took the easiest road. Too bad, I wish you had taken the one where Sue's invisible form is, indeed, visible, giving her that glass-looking visual.
ReplyDeleteHey, but that doesn't mean that this month hasn't been anything less than MARVELOUS! Keep up the good work! :-)
It´s true, marvel didnt have an iconic female hero, in fact i agree it´s hard to pick one. But if i had to choose i´d say Sue is a great option cause she´s been one of the most recognizable female heroes and also she´s grown as a character in many ways. And she can kick many super power heroes´s asses. I guess because of the great stories Jean grey reached in the late 70´s as the most powerful girl as phoenix, her forbiden love with logan etcetc she´s also good choise.
ReplyDeleteIf I was to just throw in a random request? Zebediah "Purple Man" Killgrave! My favourite villain.
ReplyDeleteSue Richards is definitely the 'soccer mom' of the Marvel U.
Yeah unlike DC with Wonder Woman, Marvel doesn't have a distinct female character to represent the Marvel Universe.
ReplyDeleteI would choose Sue or Storm. And I was little disappointed when neither of these two characters got their own stamps. Spider-Woman and Elektra instead got one.
