A WHOsday; The 8th Doctor

Doctor Who's the 8th Doctor (Paul McGann)

Obama or Romney? Who cares - it's a WHOsday! Time for another one of the Doctors, and this time I've gone with Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor.

I have a confession to make though - I've never seen the Doctor Who film in which the 8th makes his appearance. I've heard mixed things about it, is it something worth seeing?

  1. it was an attempt to alter the tone of the doctor a bit and capture the american audience and didn't succeed in that respect. as a stand alone film i seem to recall enjoying it but i haven't seen it since it was first shown which was a long time ago.

  2. The movie itself is crap, but not because of McGann. He would have been a good Doctor-- and perhaps even a great one-- had he been given better material to work with.

  3. Oh, it's horrible. All Americanized and mid-90s. But, agreed, it's not McGann's fault.

  4. It was a good movie. The plot could have been better but Paul was PERFECT as the Eighth Doctor. I just wish the BBC had let him reprise the role when they restarted the series in 2005

  5. The story is weak, but it's TOTALLY worth watching for McGann alone. He's absolutely amazing in the film, and I believe if he had been given his own series, he would've been highly regarded as one of the best. So my suggestion is: watch his one-off film, then start collecting all his audios, which actually do give him awesome stories and in which he gives some truly legendary performances.

  7. If you're a Doctor Who fan it's a must see. There are mixed reviews but what's not to enjoy...

    The Master Vs The Doctor.

A huge new look amazing TARDIS interior.

Quite a dramatic exit for the great 7th Doctor.

A good solid beginning for a brilliant new Doctor.

    Jelly babies.

    A motorcycle chase scene.

    Need I go on?

Paul McGann will probably always be one of my favourite Doctors, I highly recommend giving it a view!

  8. The movie is terrible but Paul McGann is a delight.

He's played the Eighth Doctor in many audio dramas, though, and I understand they're a lot of fun.

  9. It is the transition point between what Who was and what Who would become from a look/theme perspective. McGann is a great Doctor. The movie has many great moments. Worth seeing. Is it a great story? No, not really.

    Love the pictures. :)

  10. When it came out the film was very controversial with fans because it humanised the Doctor, but these days with David Tennant's Doctor and all it's really not that big of a deal.\

9 down, 2 to go. Hope we see Docs 6 and 7 some time soon.

  11. The movie is, well, a mid-90's made-for-TV movie. As long as you don't go into it expecting it to be something other than a mid-90's made-for-TV movie, it's fine. And as others have said, McGann is very good in it.

  13. I loathed it when it first aired, but after re-watching it recently I softened on it. Paul McGann is as good as everyone is saying, and it is -- on the whole -- as bad as everyone is saying as well. However, it does have its moments and is worth checking out.

  14. Worth seeing for McGann, make lots of "Oh No, iz Goh-zilla!" (stomp stomp) noises when Eric Roberts is onscreen. McGann's fantastic, Eric Roberts goes beyond campy into Adam West campy territory.

And I didn't care too much for Grace either. 6.5 out of 10 I'd think.. the TARDIS is great, McGann is great, McCoy is even good. Story was weak, and where and when they aired the show was crap. (Against Roseanne and football? Really?)

It did well in Britain, lousy in the US.

  15. Well - for my part having seen the movie after the new series ( actually after series 4)and before I had seen much of the classics, I genuinely enjoyed watching it - you really should give it a try ( and yes, it is very "90's")and maybe check out some of Big Finish's audio adventures with the 8th Doctor - they are great!

  16. I've never seen it but it looks alot like McGann indeed. I've got a suggestion, have you ever tried to do Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs characters? It would be great!

  17. Every bit of DW is worth seeing, even the not so good ones. The TVM has a few rubbish moment but it mostly pretty good.

Love the new pics by the way! :)

  20. The movie sucks, but his books rock. Also, McGann is a great Doctor. About the only good part of the movie.

  21. Ignore Natalie-the movie's great, and McGann is a great version of the Doctor.

  22. Paul McGann is a great Doctor. The movie would have been better if it had been done by the bbc. I've listened and enjoyed all of Paul McGann's big finish stories. It would be cool if he makes an appearance in the 50th anniversary. And i love all the animations on your site.

    Happy New Year.
