Spider-Man (Classic)

Well, what better way to top off the Month of Marvel than with the flagship Marvel hero - Spidey!

Growing up, I loved finding stacks of Marvel comics at garage sales, and I'd look down in the corner of each issue's cover and see that trademark Spidey head looking back up at me. Good times.

Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed Month of Marvel! I couldn't cover every character here, but I can surely see revisiting the Marvel U sometime.

Month of MARVEL: Day 30

Spider-Man (Black Suit)

I gotta say, Spidey has gotta have the best alternate costume in comics! It's nearly as classic and dare I say "elegant" as the original. And that's all I have to say.

Mary Jane Watson

Face it, Tiger - Spidey just wouldn't feel right without Mary Jane around. She may not be a cybernetic super-powered mutant assassin, but she's still an important part of the Marvel Universe. Plus, as far as females go, MJ might just be Marvel's most well known gal.

Month of MARVEL: Day 28

Hobgoblin

I have to admit, I'm not really clear on the background of the Hobgoblin character, it seems somewhat jumbled to me. And while not as neat as the Green Goblin, I do think "Hoby" is a cool looking character at any rate.

Doctor Octopus

I think Doc Ock was one of my favorite Spidey villains growing up. Moreso than the Green Goblin I think. I just found him (and Mysterio) to be what I latched on to most while watching the old cartoon. A fun, neat looking bad guy with 4 mechanical arms!

I would imagine what I could do with those arms! Gym class would be easier, Climbing trees would be a breeze, and that bully kid at school wouldn't even be able to touch me!

Venom

Here's the fan-favorite Spider-man baddie, Venom. I sure remember all the excitement around the Todd McFarlane run on Spider-man, and also that awesome Eric Larsen illustration work in the booming 90's. Man, those were fun comics to pick up. Brings me back...

Wolverine (yellow suit)

You guys were right! Logan should have his cigar, so I put together the yellow costume Wolvie with that trademark cigar.

Dark Phoenix

I decided to do the Dark Phoenix, I think she's a pretty cool character. One gal you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of though.

Angel

Here's Angel (in his red and blue suits), who I actually think is a pretty cool character, but unfortunately was given a part in X-men 3 that seemed rather pointless to me. Hopefully he'll get a better shot sometime in a future film. He is one of the original X-men after all!

Month of MARVEL: Day 22

Wolverine

As a fellow Canadian, (and as I just found out, born in the same province as me too!) I of course feel a bit of a kinship with Logan. He's lived so long, he could have learned a lot of things - makes me wonder if he ever played hockey! He seems to have lost that trademark Canadian politeness though.

Phoenix (aka Jean Grey)

How would you like to date a telepathic girl? You'd be tempted to try to get on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" while she'd be sitting at home with wikipedia at her fingertips sending you answers with her mind.

As long as you didn't mind dating a girl who could read your mind.

Come to think of it, I think there are some females who can pretty much do that already...

Month of MARVEL: Day 20

Magneto

Magneto is one of the villians who made it into the x-men movies of course, albeit tweaked for film. Sir Ian in the role was definately a departure from the muscular Jim Lee-esque look of the character, but hey, if it was up to me, I'd rather go for the good actor with the powerful presence also. Below is a "darkened face" variation for ya.

Cyclops

Cyclops. I have to admit, I'm not too well versed on Cyke. In the movies and cartoons and stuff that I've seen, Scott Summers is just kind of... there.

You'd have to think though, growing up he'd sure be a handful.

Daredevil

Matt Murdock, the son of a New York boxer, blinded in an accident where all his other senses are heightened, allowing him tremendous acrobatic skill? That's just a cool premise for a superhero.

Nightcrawler



One of my favorite X-men is Nightcrawler. The costume, the blue skin, the personality, the teleportation powers with the BAMF! sound effect, all cool.

It was a real delight to see him in X-men 2 and he was one of the reasons I liked that movie so much.

The Thing

Ben Grimm (The Thing) is the kind of guy I'd like to have as a friend. He seems like the kind of guy who'd sit and have a hot chocolate with you, but would also lay down the law if a thief came around the house at night.

I just wouldn't keep anything too fraglie around the house.

Invisible Woman aka Sue Storm

Hey, who do you think is Marvel's marquee female character? I mean, DC has Wonder Woman, (though Catwoman may be up there) but what would be the most recognisable gal in Marvel's stable? Would it be Sue? Or X-men's Storm? Rogue? Electra? Mary Jane? hmmm...

The Human Torch aka Johnny Storm

I knew The Human Torch was an old comic character, but just recently learned that the first Human Torch was actually an android who had mastery over fire, and he first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 back in 1939 (The same year Batman debuted!).

It was much later that Marvel reimagined a new Human Torch as a member of the Fantasitc Four. Go figure.

Mr. Fantastic aka Reed Richards

Here's Reed Richards (and I do love those alliterated comic book names) or as he's also called, Mr. Fantastic. He's one of the Marvel Universe's smartest people...or is he the smartest? Anyway, more Fantastic Four goodness is on the way...

Silver Surfer


The Silver Surfer initially struck me as a goofy sort of idea, but reading the comics and seeing him in action, I think the chrome-skinned Norin Radd slicing through space is pretty cool. He was one of the things I actually kinda enjoyed in that Fantastic Four sequel.

Month of MARVEL: Day 11

Doctor Doom

Time for some villainy!

Doctor Doom is cool because:
1. He's the monarch of his own country.
2. His intellect is such that he can go toe-to-toe with Reed Richards (aka Mr Fantastic aka The Stretchy Guy)
3. He's gotta have one of the best comic book names ever.

Month of MARVEL: Day 10

She-Hulk

She's not just the "girl version" of the Hulk. Jennifer Walters is the green-skinned lawyer-by-day who, unlike her unruly cousin, can kick butt and still keep herself under control.

I don't expect to see her grace the silver screen anytime soon, but hey, who knows?

Ghost Rider

Here's another of Marvel's unique characters, Ghost Rider!

He's a guy with a flaming skull for a head who rides a motorcycle and takes out vengeance upon street scum! How cool is that?

The Punisher

Heh heh, I was defintely too young to read Punisher comics when I did, what with the bloodletting and the sending of fingers in the mail and all. Probably messed me up a little :)

I guess there's a new Punisher movie coming soon. Are you guys interested?

The Hulk

I don't really remember when I first heard of The Incredible Hulk, but I do remember seeing the tv show at some point. I was definately too young at the time to really "get" the show, other than the fact that this guy turned big and green when he got mad, and then beat people up.

That was cool enough for me.

Thor

It's Marvel's Thor! I was wondering, where did they get the name for Thor's hammer, the Mjolnir? That's quite the name...

Hey, remember that little girl in Adventures in Babysitting who was totally into Thor? It'd be cool to get one of those helmets :)

Luke Cage

Sweet Christmas! It's Marvel's grooviest heavyweight, Luke Cage!

I thought I heard they were making a Luke Cage movie too. I'm thinking they'll probably go for a different look for the movie :) Although if they did go with this look, I'd definately go watch it!

Namor the Sub-Mariner

Today brings everybody's favorite temperamental sub-mariner, Namor! You gotta love the Hermes-like ankle wings...

Iron Man

I guess Iron Man has received a lot more attention now due to the movie, and good for him! Here he is in his more classic look.

Most of these Marvel guys this month will be in their classic duds. The classic looks are simpler, usually more recognisable, and they make for better translations to a Simpson-y style.

Captain America

One of the great things about Marvel Comics is the great variety of interesting and distinctly cool looking characters. Each one of them have their own personality and appeal. As a kid I had so much fun following the adventures of the Marvel heroes. Big, small...dark, bright,...blue, green, or invisible - the Marvel Universe is a cool place to visit.

Anyway, to celebrate Marvel, Springfield Punx will feature a different Marvel character every day this month! Who better to start with than Cap himself?!
