Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?

Indiana Jones

I don't know if I have much to say about the Indiana Jones movies, other than the fact that growing up, I loved watching them as tv matinees, great adventures and a lot of fun.

My favorite is definately Raiders of the Lost Ark. I haven't bothered to watch the new one yet though. Is it worth watching? Let me know...

EDIT - 'MOCK!' in the comments made a request for the Cairo Swordsman, I'm a fairly sentimental guy myself, so here he is...

  1. I would say you should watch the first two-third's of the new movie and ignore the rest. Ignorance is bliss :) I personally like The Last Crusade though.

  2. Shucks, I remember liking it for what it was. What happened in the last third... ooooh, riiight. Yeah, that is a potential deal breaker. If you find you don't like it, you still have three rather brilliant movies you can watch.

As far as favorites go, I'd also have to say Last Crusade. It was the first one I'd seen and the most I watched growing up. There's just something about his relationship with his father that is ... hilarious, y'know?

  3. There was a funny Southpark episode about how Steven Spielberg and George Lucas raped the Indiana Jones series.

Hmm...I wonder what the southpark characters would look like if you gave them the "Simpsons" look...

  4. I liked the new one. I think they did a great job at capturing the 50's with communists, bikers in leather jackets and UFO paranoia.
There was some CGI in it, but I was expecting that so I wasn't that enraged about as certain other fanboys out there where.

  5. I can only speak for myself, but I enjoyed the fourth Indy movie.

I'd waited for it to happen ever since I was 15. I WANTED to enjoy it. And the film, for all it was, was not rubbish enough to manage and spoil that. (I'd had the same kind of naive anticipation for Star Trek: Nemesis, and I couldn't help it: it was SHIT no matter the angle!)

There are a few scenes that are definitely ridiculous and over-the-top - but are they any more ridiculous and over-the-topper than the according scenes and elements in the first three films? No.

There are also some genuinely funny and very classic conversations; my favourite being the conversation taking place between Indy and his *ahem* love interest who are both, at the time, caught in quicksand. The movie's worth watching for these scenes alone. You just have to get over the rest, but I was able to do that with a bit of goodwill, and it wasn't so hard.

There are also some things that the film did really well, and much better than I had dared to hope: Indy has aged, but neither pretends to be 35 still, nor (and I am especially grateful for that) does the old-age-joke get over-used. The very last scene (Indy's hat) is another opportunity to majorly mess up the entire thing, and they didn't.

The fandom mostly disagrees with the plot as such, which I'm sorry to say is down to personal taste (I didn't mind it THAT much) and down to the waste of the talent of an actor like John Hurt who spent the duration of the film blabbering gibberish. (Mind you, I think that the idea of a human oracle as opposed to a journal was actually a good one...)

Anyway. It certainly entertained me and I'd watch it again.

Btw, thanks for all the Batmans. Love your illustrations.

  8. The new movie: if you like Indy it has some nice Indy moments in it. Unfortunately the best line in the film was spoiled by the trailer. It's a good Saturday night popcorn movie. If only they could have kept George Lucas away from it...

  9. Short answer: NO, it's not.

  10. Can you do the Cairo Swordsman? My grandfather LOVED that scene...so much so that he actually spoiled it for me (because he saw it with my cousins first) but did so innocently. I have made an effort to collect Indy and the Swordsman in all their toy glory in rememberance of him and his love of that scene...would be cool to "add" your work to the colelction.

  11. I think that if you're not that fussed about Indiana Jones, you'll probably really dig it. It's not that bad at all - not a patch on the originals, but still better than all the 'clones' (The Mummy, Romancing the Stone, etc.).
And the ending? Watch it now before someone spoils it for you!

  16. The latest installment is worth seeing...when you are in a good mood...with plenty of snacks...in a comfy chair...and your expectations are not too high.
It was nice to see Karen Allen again.
